Megaphobema velvetosoma is one of the largest tarantulas in the world, after those of the Theraphosa genus, reaching considerable size, with a temperament similar to that of tarantulas of the Theraphosa sp.

DIMENSIONS: L - 8-9 cm body excluding legspan; adult size (including legspan) remains no larger than 25-26 cm.

ORIGIN: Ecuador and Peru

ENVIRONMENTAL VALUES: Temperature 26-28°C during the day, 22-23°C at night, 80% humidity, and optimal ventilation.

DIET: Small insects are suitable for spiderlings (they prefer fruit flies), and from size M, appropriately sized feeding insects (crickets, cockroaches, worms, locusts) are fine. Medium-sized isopods are quite voracious. Crickets and locusts in particular are recommended as they are high in protein. Adults can be fed pinkies (newborn mice). Adults should be fed twice a week.

RECOMMENDED SETUP: Large terrarium, 50x40x40 cm for adults, 30x30x30 cm for juveniles and medium-sized animals. The substrate should be at least 10 cm deep, consisting of a mix of peat and coconut fiber, along with tropical plants. A large water bowl and optimal ventilation are required, simulating the undergrowth of the Amazonian rainforest near their native habitat.

HABITS: Typically arboreal

AGGRESSIVENESS: 8 – Not suitable for beginners, given its aggressiveness and difficulty in breeding.

GROWTH RATE: Medium

CITES STATUS: No
