Peruphasma schultei is a phasmid native to Peru, characterized by a beautiful black coloration with small, bright red wings, not suited for flight. It is relatively peaceful, but when threatened, it secretes a stinging substance.
SIZE: Approximately 5-6 cm in size, varying slightly between males and females.
ORIGIN: Northern Peru and the Cordillera del Condor
ENVIRONMENTAL VALUES: Temperature 24°-25°C during the day, 20°-21°C at night, humidity approximately 40%.
DIET: They feed on privet, olive, honeysuckle, and lilac as basic food plants.
RECOMMENDED SETUP: Terrarium or fauna box 20x20x30 cm, 5 cm coconut fiber or vermiculite substrate, along with plants that require low humidity. Mist once or twice a week, as they cannot tolerate high humidity like their tropical cousins.
HABITS: Active primarily at night, during the cooler hours
AGGRESSIVENESS: 0–none; however, if threatened, they may expel a strong-smelling substance that, if in contact with the eyes or skin, is quite irritating at any age.
GROWTH RATE: Medium-fast; after about 5–6 months, the nymphs reach sexual maturity and have a life expectancy of about 12 months.
CITES STATUS: No
