The Gromphadorhina portentosa or Madagascar hissing cockroach is a large ornamental roach, occasionally used also as a feeder insect for exotic pets; omnivorous, it can live in groups and is easy to care for and breed.

ENVIRONMENTAL VALUES: temperature between 25 to 28 degrees Celsius and humidity around 60/65%
DIET: dry food (dog kibble or fish food in pellet or stick form) and/or wet food (fresh fruits and vegetables)
SETUP: A terrarium or fauna box of variable size based on the number of specimens housed, with no substrate or, if necessary, a substrate deep and moist enough to allow insects to burrow if necessary. The water bowl is optional as long as at least one source of hydration is available, such as fruit or vegetables. It's important to provide natural or artificial decorations to ensure adequate hiding places.
HABITS: terrestrial, may occasionally burrow if sufficiently deep substrate is available within the enclosure
BEHAVIOR: A very docile and social insect, it can live in groups of various sizes depending on the space available to it. It is harmless to humans and other animals; in case of stress, it can emit the classic "hiss" typical of these cockroaches.
GROWTH RATE: Fast with high temperatures
LIFESPAN: In captivity they can live between 2 to 5 years, reaching sexual maturity in about 7/8 months
