Your First Scorpion!

The scorpion is without a doubt the animal that most inspires fear and charm in the mind of each of us, young and old; its threatening aspect, the claws, the sting .. are just some of the aspects that fascinate more and more lovers of exotic about these arachnids. However, there are few who still try their hand at breeding these animals, as the knowledge in the Italian terrarium sector is rather meager compared to that of breeders or enthusiasts overseas or other European countries close to us. CHOICE OF THE TERRARIUM The suitable terrarium must be not too large (20x20 or 30x30 are fine) and well set up to allow the maximum of the setting of these animals, also based on the type of scorpion chosen; a desert (eg. Hadrurus arizonensis; Scorpio maurus, etc.) prefer a rather high bottom (about 10 cm) and therefore, it is necessary to choose a terrarium developed slightly in height (30x30x30 or 35 for example), to allow them to dig. INTERNAL EQUIPMENT For desert scorpions it is essential to maintain a high substrate to allow them to dig deep holes, approximately 7/10 cm, by inserting a bottom substrate composed of peat or fine coconut fiber, to complete, superficially, with fine desert sand. , to be kept dry constantly. It is advisable to insert some internal enrichment such as rocks or succulent plants, with firm roots, to avoid being uprooted during the excavations of your scorpion. For tropical and subtropical scorpions a bottom of about 7/10 cm is required, composed on the bottom of expanded clay for optimal water drainage; on top of this layer it is advisable to insert acidic sphagnum peat and a layer of coconut fiber; the coconut fiber allows a high water retention, thus favoring the maintenance of the fundamental humidity values for these scorpions (between 70 and 85%). For the tropics, it is very important to insert a series of tropical plants and natural furnishings (woods, mosses, stones) to further enrich the internal environment and encourage a greater "exploratory instinct" on the part of these animals inside the terrarium. FOOD AND NUTRITION One of the particular characteristics of scorpions is their ability to resist long periods of fasting, to survive in the most remote places; however it is advisable to offer these animals a varied diet, based on feeding insects (crickets, worms, cockroaches) previously enriched with calcium, to promote the correct growth of the bone structure
