Hymenopus coronatus also known as orchid mantis, is a beautiful mantis capable of camouflaging itself by taking on the colors of an orchid flower to hunt the insects it feeds on; it requires optimal air flow.

SIZE: L2/L3 approximately 3 cm; females can reach up to 8 cm in length, whereas males remain smaller, at around 3 to 4 cm.

SEX: Not sexed

FOUND IN: Indonesia and Malaysian forests

ENVIRONMENTAL VALUES: Temperature between 26-28 degrees Celsius during the day and 22-24 degrees Celsius at night, humidity must be around 60 to 70%

DIET: Insects of a size appropriate for the mantis, with a preference for flying and highly active prey (Drosophila, Acheta, etc.). Provide live food approximately every 3–4 days.

SETUP: Terrarium or faunabox 20x20x30/40H cm —well-ventilated and vertically developed—with a substrate layer of at least 5 cm of peat or coconut fiber, along with natural or artificial decorations that provides adequate shelter while allowing the specimen to climb; hydration provided by periodic misting (once every three days).

HABITS: Diurnal and solitary species; it does not tolerate other mantises of the same or any other species.

BEHAVIOR: Quite shy; if disturbed, it may make short dashes and small jumps in attempt to escape. Keeping this species in groups is strongly discouraged, given its extreme cannibalistic tendencies.
